This is me

Thought I'd share a recent picture of me - taken, I think, at week 33 of the pregnancy (2 weeks ago), when the weather was vaguely sunny and summery. I'm looking out of a window at the moment, and it looks like we might have more rain any minute now.

I'm feeling good. Still tired but feeling more happy and contented.

I'll also post a crafterly update soon.

Thank you my wonderful blogging friends

Just a quick post to say thank you to my wonderful blogging friends for all their encouraging words and advice. I feel very honoured to have such wonderful and caring friends.

I promise that I am taking it easy. I am letting a lot of things slide. (the kids are enjoying their more than the "occasional" McDonalds.) I just wanted an avenue to release some frustration. I've always been a person who does things and has loads of energy. I just feel different. Baby is growing well and kicking up a storm. We're all looking forward to her arrival.

I blame the pregnancy

My sporadic and uninspiring posting can definitely be related to being pregnant! I am tired (constantly!). I have lack of focus - I just flit between projects neither completing nor progressing on any project. I am about to start at least 7 new projects, but I haven't because I can't be bothered to look for the yarn, pattern or to swatch. Since the builders finished, I have been tidying up and reorganising what feels like the whole house. I am officially fed up of washing and folding tiny mini stuff.

My list of things to do before baby arrives include:
  • finish packing the hospital bag. Find essentials like maternity bras!
  • Put up blinds and curtains in the children's new bedroom so that they can move in. I certainly don't want them waking up at 5 in the morning
  • set up the nursery in the room to be vacated by the children
  • Spring clean the whole house as it's covered in dust (still!)
  • Tidy up spare room so my parents can stay when they visit
  • I'm sure there's more but I can't think of it at the moment
I must go through my stash as well because I am about to collapse under a mountain of yarn.

Knitting workshop

I have had such a fabulous time on Saturday. I signed up for the Professional Finishing Techniques course held at Stash and taken by Debbie Abrahams. I had persuaded Kate to come too. And we met Fiona and Heather. Being a mainly self taught knitter, I've kinda fudged my way through quite a lot of the finishing of a garment. Boy, am I glad I went. Debbie is a wonderful teacher - very knowledgeable, approachable and enthuastic. What's great was also knitters sharing experiences and tips with each other.

The course was based around knitting and finishing a sweater for teddy which has all the elements of full sized garment. So , I turned all this.......

into this.....

Teddy is one happy bunny. Did you notice the contrast colour neckband? It wasn't intentional. I've been having pregnancy related forgetfulness and just plain forgot to bring my yarn and notes! But I managed..... I'm very proud of my mattress stitch. Look - all perfectly matched up and you can't see the purple yarn which I used for sewing up!

Now I just need to finish up some of my WIPs to practise my professional finishing!

My baby is 3 today!

Another little milestone today. My little baby, Keira, is 3 today. Gosh, how time flies. I remember her birth like it was yesterday. Waters breaking, bloody painful contractions, long labour (in comparison to Aidan, but not really in actuality). And now, she is a little girl, a proper little girl who loves pink, princesses, pink, ballet, pink, dressing up, shoes. Did I mention she loves pink? We will be having a few friends over on Thursday for a fairy princess party. Heaven help me.

Here she is with her big bro, modelling my latest FO. The skirt is the ruffles skirt from Barefoot Knits. Project specs:
Yarn - Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece in Truffles, Tea Rose and Pink-a-Boo.
Needle size - 4mm
Modifications - knitted in the round instead of flat, which meant I had to cast on 324 stitches for the ruffles. Urgghhh! But there was minimal sewing up!
I really like this book, which I purchased from a LYS in Denver. There are several patterns in the book which I would definitely make.

7 random things about me

I've been tagged! For the first time by Kim for 7 random things about me.

Rules:
1. Each player starts with 7 random facts about themselves.
2. People who are tagged write a blog post about their 7 random things and post the rules.
3. At the end of your post you need to tag 7 people and post their names.
4. Don’t forget to leave them a comment and tell them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

Well, here is my list:
1. I love pickles. I like pretty much every kind of pickled vegetable
- from Europe - capers, cornichons, gherkins, olives, artichoke
- from Japan - pickled ginger, radish, cucumber
- from Korea - kim chee
- from Malaysia/Singapore - achar (pickled vegetable in a spicy, nutty sauce) and my grandmother makes the yummiest pickled chilli stuffed with raw grated papaya
and also pickled salted vegetable and szechuan vegetable, pickled mango.
There's at least 6 or 7 varieties of pickles currently in my fridge. Yumm....

2. We have a king sized bed. But I always sleep right on the edge of the bed. There's about a 3 foot gap between hubby and I. Actually, I like having a cuddle before bed, but there should be no touching after that! I can never understand in the movies when the actors are all cuddled up before and wake up all cuddled up as well.

3. I have a freaky second toe (actually both second toes are freaky!) They are affectionately called ET toes by my entire family. Luckily, this is a trait I haven't passed on to my kids.

4. I can eat most anything for breakfast - cake, curry noodles, leftover pizza. Anything! But I need a cup of coffee with it.

5. I am the most impatient person I know, except when it comes to dealing with the kids. I don't often lose it them. Hubby and my parents think that is so amazing!

6. I tend to do things on a "all or nothing" basis. Take knitting - I have purchased hundreds of balls of yarn and books and magazine in the last 5 years when I took up knitting again. Last year, apart from knitting books or childcare books, I read a total of 6 books. But this year, I have read loads (at least 2 or 3 a month so far).

7. I used to be a complete party girl, out most nights of the week. But now, I am so happy and contented to be at home, watching tv, knitting and reading blogs.

Now - I have to decide on 7 people to tag............................................

Feeling virtuous

Today I handed over the baby blanket and Anouk pinafore to my friend who will be attending her goddaughter's christening in 2 weeks time. I agreed to knit a baby blanket for her in November and only fiinished it in March/April. The baby was born in Oct. Boy, do I feel bad about it!! So bad that I knitted her the Anouk pinafore to make up for it!!! But now that they are both finished and handed over, I feel very virtuous and relieved. What's even better, she loves both of the items. Hurray! Two WIPs done - more projects to start. Oohh, what shall I start next?

I've also decided to show a picture of my orchid. I got it as a gift about 8 years ago - all beautiful and full of flowers. That was the only time it ever flowered. Since then, nothing! Suddenly, it's decided to flower again (well it has one flower!) but I'm so impressed and overjoyed by this prospect.

Ps - you can tell I'm not very green fingered judging by the dried stems and chewed up leaves!

Time

Where does the time go? Blink and suddenly it's 12 days since I updated this poor neglected blog. Much has been happening in my life. The builders and decorators are still here. Most of the building work is finished and they are just finishing up the last few bits. I'm having my fingers and toes crossed that this will be finished by early next week. The new carpets are arriving on Thursday and I can spend the weekend tidying up and making our house a home again. I can generally live in a messy environment but even I'm getting annoyed with the mess and untidyness. What's worse I can't find a thing!

The other annoying thing is that I've had the worst back ache for as long as I can remember. I've had the slight dull ache in my lower back for a few weeks. But that's suddenly changed to sharp shooting pains from my glutes to my lower back. I've booked in to see my physio and thankfully the diagnosis isn't serious. Just muscular pain caused by an unbalanced pelvis, made worse by a growing bump. (The bump is seriously growing - I must take another photo soon!)

Enough complaining. I do have some WIPs to show. I'm suffering from startitis. I have TONS of WIPs which need finishing but haven't got the motivation to do it. So I just started 3 new projects. Yay!

Anouk from Knitty in Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece in Truffle and Pink-a-boo.
Jaywalker socks in Opal rainforest Tiger. A little bit late to the party but enjoying it never the less! These socks are hopefully for my May Sock-a-month along.
Rusted Root from Zephyrstyle in Brown Sheep Cotting Fleece in Wisteria, for the Sexy Knitters knitalong. I probably won't get to wear this until next summer!

More about food

Today's post is quickie one about (surprise, surprise) food again.

For Polly, Achar Awak is a Nyonya dish, a Straits Chinese recipe. There are 3 variations of Nyonya cooking - Penang (which is influenced in part by Thailand), Malacca and Singapore (which are influenced in part by Indonesia). Achar Awak is a mixed vegetable pickle. The blended spice mixture of onions, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, galangal, chilli and tumeric is fried on low heat until fragrant. Then blanch some vegetables (carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, long beans) in water with vinegar and sugar. Mix the vegetables in the spice mixture with more sugar and vinegar. Stick them in bottles. Roast and pound peanuts and sesame seeds for sprinkling on the pickle when ready to eat. Here's what we had to eat last night - stir fried vegetables, chicken curry and achar. Yum!

I've also managed to finish some of my knitting projects. And just in time for SAM3. These are my first toe up socks. I made them for my little girl (although she hates the socks, she loves the yarn especially all that pink!). I used the generic toe up sock pattern from Knitty.com. The yarn is Lana Grossa Meilenwet. I didn't even try to make them matching but they just turned up that way. I am really getting the hang of sock knitting. I'm going to have to try more complicated patterns.

Food cravings

There are tons of things about being pregnant that I've forgotten.

Tiredness - I don't remember ever being so tired. I'm pretty sure it's because I 'm running around after 2 kids already and I am getting older.
Being an emotional mess - I'm currently overreacting to everything.
Having an independent, moving entity in your tummy - pressing on the bladder (ugh!), dancing at 3 am, having what feels like hiccups.....
Feeling uncomfortable, having chronic backache, eating constantly (this one I'm not complaining about!), the list goes on...(some of it too yucky to mention)

One thing I can mention is that, I am having some food cravings, specifically spicy Malaysian food. They are kinda difficult to come by in London. Luckily, there is one pretty good Malaysian restaurant which I love and we went last week. That was good. I also had a real craving for achar ( spicy pickled vegetables) but I wasn't sure how to make it. I remember my grandmother making huge vats of the stuff for Chinese New Year and parties. A long distance call to my Mum and 10 minutes later. I have a recipe. One afternoon of chopping and cooking later, I have 2 huge jars of achar. Hurray!! And they taste so good, if a bit spicy ( I think too much chilli powder went in!) Actually, it would have taken half the time if the kids didn't decide to help as well. Here they are pounding the roasted peanuts for the topping. (I must take a picture of my cooking efforts before I finish eating all of it.)

We have been enjoying really beautiful weather. We've even managed to put up the outdoor toys for the kids in our tiny London garden (or more accurately, patch). I love this temperate , sunny weather. I don't like it when the temperature hits the 30's. I would be happy if it stayed like this for the rest of summer.

How not to choose projects

Oh what a week. I've been working on a bunch of projects including trying to finish some WIPs. I have finally finished the baby blanket for my friend's goddaughter. I've knitted a few more squares for the mitred square blanket. I've started my April socks for Sock a month along. I've also started and finished a stripey tank for my godson whose birthday is coming up. What I've noticed is that most of these projects have literally hundreds of ends to sew in/tidy up. I hate sewing, really, really hate it. Arrrgghhh!! I guess I'll just have a few glasses of wine to dull the pain ...... oh damn, I can't drink at the moment. I'll just suffer in silence.

Here's close up of the stripey tank. My godson will be turning one and is rather big for his age. My own son is 4 and rather small for his age. I think it'll fit. There's room for some growth!

Pattern notes:
Pattern: Stripey tank from Zoe Mellor's Adorable Knits for tiny tots
Yarn: GGH Samoa in petrol blue, khaki, off white, turquoise, dark khaki and ice blue
Modifications: Added length to the tank due to slight issues with gauge and I knitted it in the round till the armhole shapings.
This was definitely a pretty quick and easy knit - knitting time 3 evenings. Sewing in the ends will probably take another 3 evenings!

I also wanted to show my new yarn cupboard. As you know, I've got the builders in at the moment. One of the things I'm having done is removing a bidet (who has these things anymore!) in the children's bathroom and putting in a cupboard. It's going to be a big cupboard - 2.5 feet in depth and 6 feet in height. Hubby thinks the cupboard is extra storage for his junk too, but there won't be space. It'll have kids toys/junk/extra clothing and my yarn! Here are the kids demonstrating how big this space is!

New York City

It's been a week since my return from the wonderful New York City and I haven't had a moment to post on this poor neglected blog. Apart from the builders in the house, Aidan has also been very ill. He's been running a temperature of 38 to 40 degrees, has a very sore throat, poor appetite, and the worst bit, he's so whiney and clingy. Ugghhh. At least, he's feeling a bit better and I haven't had to wake up at least 20 times a night.

I hardly took any photos while I was in NYC. Yarn stores - nope. Sights - nope. Oh well, I'll just show some photos of my purchases later. I really love going to NYC, it's a bit like a second home to me. Kevin lived there for a while and I used to visit him lots. It's just so great to wander around and know exactly where everything is (kinda!)

Well, Kate and I had a fantastic time. Within 1 hour of arriving into our hotel, we were in Purl Soho, coveting and fondling all sorts of yarn. The yarn choice was amazing. But I was quite strict with myself (I still have about 300 balls of yarn to knit, remember!). So my total yarn purchase is detailed below. Some Cascade 220, 3 skeins of Euroflax linen and 5 skeins of Blue Sky Alpaca Silk. All for me!
We also stopped by a few doors away at the fabric store arm of Purl. All I can is WOW!! The fabric choice was astounding. They were unwrapping their new shipment from Japan. I couldn't walk away without buying anything. I have no project in mind, but I guess there's a baby quilt in there somewhere.

We also managed to hit a few other yarn stores like Knitty City and The Point. Kate carried on with the purchasing but I managed to restrain myself. It was so hard!!! We also found the mecca that is MJ trimming. Again - astounding choice available. After that, I was almost all yarned out and just had to carry on with normal shopping.

Spherey

It's really worrying admitting one's music tastes. I am quite an 80's girl especially the mid 80's. Big hair (dodgy perm), big shirts, really bad taste fashion..... Ugh (shuddering!!!!)Anyway, enough reminiscing.

I have also finished one item of knitting!!! I have so many WIPs which need a heck of a lot of focus which I just can't seem to find. Anyway, here's Spherey from Jess Hutch's book. I made him for some friends who are expecting their first baby and I''ll be seeing them this weekend. Where you might ask? IN NEW YORK!!!!! Yup, Kate and I are off to NYC for a weekend of yarn shopping and shopping and eating. We've shortlisted 6 yarn stores in our "must visit" list. So if anyone needs anything (yarn , etc from NYC) let drop me a note and I'm sure I'll be happy to shop for you too.

Pattern - Spherey from Jess Hutch's booklet
Yarn - GGH Samoa (very like Rowan's All Season Cotton)
I have also managed to start something else in the last 2 nights. I've been hankering to start the Mitre Square blanket from Mason Dixon Knitting So while hubby is away in Hong Kong for business for 10 days, I dragged out 30 odd balls of GGH Samoa and Rowan ASC and cast on. 2 nights and 3 squares later, I am hooked. I love deciding colour choices and seeing how it's turning out. Love it. Love it. (I know, I know, it might just end up on the BIG WIP pile, we'll see. Focus!)

Music in 1989

I saw this meme on Ruth’s blog and thought it was a great idea to do it as well. (if I can figure out how to strike things out!)
So you take the top 50 records from the year you were 18 from this
website, post the list and then -
bold the ones you liked,
strike the ones you disliked
and italicize the ones you knew but didn’t particularly like or dislike.
The ones you don’t know will still be in normal text.

I remember 1989 very well. I was going through a long torturous on-off long distance relationship with my first love (at the start of the year), taking my A-levels (in the middle of the year) and coming over to the UK for the first time for my University years and meeting my husband (towards the end of the year). Gosh, that was so long ago........

Here's my 50 songs.

WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING Kylie Minogue. I don't remember this song either. I probably didn't like it.

THIS TIME I KNOW IT'S FOR REAL Donna Summer

It's a ...........

GIRL!!! We're having another girl. (The hospital won't guarantee it but I'm pretty sure!!) 2 weeks ago, I told hubby that I had a feeling that baby's a girl. He didn't want to believe me but here we are. Aidan and hubby were hoping for a boy and Keira wanted a girl. I'm hoping she's not going to be as headstrong and stubborn as Keira. She can be such a little ....... What's funny is that my Mum says she's exactly like me as a child. I guess that's karma.

Here's a picture of the little wriggler....... and she's waving to her mum's blogging friends.
I know I've been saying that my bump is huge. So I thought I'd show you guys the evidence. Remember this is only week 21. There's plenty more growing to go.

Enough about bumps and babies. As this is a predominantly knitting blog, I thought I'd better show some pictures of knitting. I finished a pair of socks for hubby. The details are as follows:

Yarn - Sweet Georgia Demon Socks in Rusted
Needle size - 3.5mm
Pattern - Thuja from Knitty Winter 2005
My thoughts - I love the yarn. It really does go faster than the normal sock weight yarn. I love the colours - steely grey, charcoal grey and chocolately brown. It really looks good together. The pattern is also very simple and effective and quite masculine. Hubby loves the socks, which is great.

I am a bad blogger

Many apologies for the lack of blogging in the recent weeks. Firstly, there was only intermitent , expensive internet connection at the hotel in Austria. (Also, I had to use a German keyboard which meant everything took twice as long to type. The keys are not where I expected them to be!!!)

BTW - Austria was lovely. We were in a ski resort near Salzburg. I even managed to find 3 yarn shops. More about that later.

Secondly, I got a call from our builder who decided to move up the renovations from April/May to next week. We are having the top floor redesigned to accomodate the new arrival. We need the room!! Anyway, one of the rooms upstairs is currently the "dump" room, ie throw things in and wait for dust to gather. This has been happening for the last 10.5 years. I now have less than 1 week to clear out 10 years of mess. ARRGGHHHH! What's worse, this is the main room where I have been hiding my HUGE stash of yarn and books. Where am I going to hide 300 balls of yarn??? Most of my hiding spaces already contain yarn. Double ARRRGGGGHHHH!!!

Thirdly, clearing out junk has meant that I'm moving things from the second floor into the ground floor. Because I'm pregnant, I can't carry too much. So this has meant numerous trips up and down the steps. I am knackered! In fact, I can barely keep my eyes open at the moment. I'll have a more coherent and cheery post soon.

I'm off....

to the land of Sound of Music. "The hills are alive......."

Hubby and I are off to our skiing/knitting holiday before sprog number 3 arrives. I'm really looking forward to spending some quality time together. The other sprogs have been farmed off to grandparents. Yay!!

So before I go, I thought I'd show you some progress on the knitting front. I was "commissioned" by a friend to knit a baby blanket for her goddaughter. Here's what I've got so far....It's turning out a bit on the small side 24" square. I think I might have to add more borders. I'm going to have to knit for lots of babies this summer. A really good friend is having her first baby in early August (2 days after ours is due!) And another friend is having twin boys in June. Must get cracking with the knitting!!!

Irony

With the Alanis Morisette song playing in the background..................... My post today is all about irony.

Just over a year ago, I tore a ligament in my knee. I spent the best part of a year rehabbing my knee and going through a reconstruction of my ligament. The main reason was so that I could enjoy things like skiing and netball again. In late November, my lovely physios gave me the OK to play netball (missed the last game of the season, but looking forward to the new season in Jan) and to go skiing. So I booked us on a skiing holiday in March. What's ironic, is that I find out I'm pregnant a week later. So no skiing for me. What on earth am I going to do on ski resort for a week? I guess I'll just have to knit. I also had to pay extra to Ryan Air so that I could bring skis. I'm going to have to replace that with yarn and more yarn and needles and my laptop and a boxful of DVDs and books. How's that for ironic. (ps - if anyone knows of good yarn stores in Salzburg, please let me know!)

More irony? I usually prefer to let minor illness run it's course without too much medication. (I didn't want painkillers after my knee nursery, but the nurses insisted I had them. I wasn't in that much pain, so I refused!) But anyway, I've got a BAD cold at the moment, so bad that if it was hubby with the cold, it would be manflu, bordering on man-pneumonia. I'm so congested that my head feels heavy and clogged up. I've got a hacking chesty cough. The one time I think,"Hmm some drugs would be good".... I can't bloody take any!!!! Most medications would be bad for the baby. I'm just suffering in silence.

I do have some knitting to show, I'm feeling a bit uninspired so i'll leave it for another day.

Gong xi fa cai

Or Happy Chinese New Year. It's the start of a new year and a big welcome to the Year of the Pig. I'm born in the year of the pig and I'll be having a little piglet baby later in the year.

I was trying to get both kids to be in the picture below, but Keira has a huge fear of the lion. When I say huge, I mean HUGE! She woke a few nights, crying and saying - " I don't like the lion dance and the lion head. Take it away." Oh well, Aidan on the other hand, loves it. He wants to start wushu training when he's 5. He has the DVD of the Annual Malaysian Lion dance competition, which he has been watching avidly.

I've also joined the sock a monthalong here.

What's even better, I've finished my February socks. It's based on the Matahari sock pattern. I've knitted it in Sweet Georgia Speed Demon in Fondant. I used short row heels and toes and 3.5mm needles. They are super comfy and very cheery to wear, especially on dark February nights.
